Karie Spaetzel's Resume

I am a newspaper copy editor with a passion for marketing, engagement and promotion through social media and conventional sources. I am following this passion by pursuing a master’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communications through West Virginia University.

I currently work at The Charleston Daily Mail, where my job responsibilities merge digital/web editor with copy editor/designer. My role as digital/web editor includes focusing the implementation of our company’s “digital first” policy through social media promotion, website updates and multimedia projects. For example, I implemented and manage the newspaper’s Pinterest account. On the copy desk I edit copy, design pages, write headlines and select Associated Press content to use in our paper.

I also assist with the content on The Commoner Journal, an online news site I helped a former coworker launch. My duties include copy editing, ensuring the functionality of the website, engaging with readers through Facebook and Twitter, and helping with story selection.

I graduated cum laude from Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism with a bachelor’s degree in June 2009.  While a student at OU, I was a copy editor for the campus newspaper, The Post, working my way up to serving as copy chief my senior year.  While copy chief, my responsibilities  included teaching younger copy editors the basics of editing and headline writing as well as addressing any mistakes in the paper. I was also responsible for teaching my staff to upload content to a new website.

After college, I spent 14 months working part time for The Athens Messenger, a weekly newspaper covering Athens County, Ohio. I was responsible for the editing and layout of The Vinton Courier, a weekly publication covering Vinton County, Ohio, and the copy editing and layout of the weekend editions of The Athens Messenger.  I was responsible for editing content for flow, AP style, punctuation and grammar, as well as laying out pages, writing headlines, editing photos, choosing AP stories to run, selecting story placement and coordinating with editors and reporters.
